The film King of Devil's Island (2010) by director Marius Holst has won the 4+1 Audience Award for Best Picture at the second edition of MAPFRE FOUNDATION's 4+1 Film Festival. The film, which has won a prize of 20,000 Euros and a sculpture by artist Alfredo García Revuelta, will close the festival today in Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Madrid, and Rio de Janeiro, the five cities where the festival is held simultaneously.
The film is set in 1915, in a reformatory for juvenile delinquents located on an island in Norway's fjords. The facility is directed with a firm hand by the island's governor, played by Stellan Skarsgård, and discipline, hard work and physical punishment in an extremely cold environment are its daily creed. The indomitable Erling's arrival at the reformatory will trigger a rebellion. This co-production between Norway, France, Poland and Sweden, already obtained a Golden Palm at the Mostra de Valencia earlier this year, also thanks to the audiences' votes. The film was also granted a Nordic Kodak Award at the Gothenburg International Festival (Sweden). It will be shown at the festival's closing ceremony and will also be available on-line, along with the rest of the competitive section, until November 4th.
MAPFRE FOUNDATION's 4+1 Festival has only one prize: the 4+1 Audience Award for the Best Film. Endowed with a 20,000 Euro prize and a sculpture by artist Alfredo García Revuelta, the award is granted by direct votes from audience members at the Festival's five national headquarters. The trophy is made out of polychrome aluminum and is a tribute to film as a work of art, reflecting the enormous effort that goes into creating a film and the intense relationship between the director and his work.
