Lotus

Director: Pascale Simons.
The daughter of a mother who wants to die, a disabled soccer player, a family man with a double life, a hip couple in their thirties and a broken family with an autistic son. They all live in one city. And in the next 24 hours , they will be more connected than they think. A painful and loving look at the complexity of loneliness in the Netherlands. LOTUS is a rare cinematic experience that challenges audiences to question their own loneliness and that of others. Diving headfirst into the harsh individualistic reality of a big city, this film investigates fear, loneliness and love from multiple perspectives. No one seems safe in the battle for happiness. And no one is immune to the hidden pain of individualism and anonymity that causes loneliness and changes lives. The lotus is a water plant that grows from the mud towards the light. The lotus effect is the phenomenon that occurs when dirt lands on the leaf of a Lotus: It won't stick. This self-cleaning feature is due to the numerous small bumps on the leaf.

user
100 YEARS SINCE THE DEATH OF BRAM STOKER   Bram Stoker died 100 years ago and Fantasporto 2012 honors the creator of the gothic novel "Dracula". Fifty Is The New Thirty

user
If one subscribes to the hype that 50 is the new 30, then a Pandora’s box of complications, mixed signals and confused messages arise. These are some of the themes explored in the insightful comedy ABOUT FIFTY (formerly titled FIFTY-NOTHING) which opened the 2011 edition of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival on Friday evening. The resonant film is a modern comedy that explores the simple truth that it’s never too late to start over again. Even at age 50. The action centers on tw...

Something For Everyone At NY Film Festival

user
The 49th edition of the New York Film Festival, a sure sign of the Fall season, is underway, and in its substantially expanded format, there is literally something for everyone at this year’s event. The Festival, which has prided itself on being a boutique as opposed to the bazaar offered at such events in Toronto, Cannes and Berlin (and at New York’s own Tribeca Film Festival) still offers the cream of the crop from those other festival celebrations, with a sprinkling of highbrow c...

photo still from filmRAW MATERIAL... Screening at the 8th annual Reykjavik International Film Festival (RIFF), 2011.   RAW MATERIAL (Greece, 2011) by director Christos Karakepelis. This documentary left me with chills, not only because of its raw subject about the declining Greek economy but the worsening of the situation of immigrants to Greece and the inhumane lives they lead. When we follow the lives of three Roma from Albania, two Indians, a Turk and a Greek who subsist on the collec...

George Harrison: The Quiet Beatle

George Harrison, the bass player for the famed rock group The Beatles, was always referred to in the press as the “quiet one”. Now, almost 10 years after his death from lung cancer, several art exhibitions and a new documentary film by Martin Scorsese will reveal the intimate details of the Beatle who is perhaps the least known and celebrated of the group. GEORGE HARRISON: LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD is a 4-hour exploration of the intimate personal and professional life of the man ...
