user
The Slamdance Film Festival, the scruffy cousin of the Sundance Film Festival, which is also happening in Park City this week, relishes its reputation as a truly independent festival that is less focused on glamour and more on the cutting edge expression of its filmmakers. Further expanding its reach, the Festival has announced a worldwide video content collaboration with Microsoft to offer a four-film package as video-on-demand premieres. 2010 Oscars: Been There, Done That Thanks to Golden Globes

user
Well, after watching the Golden Globe Awards ceremonies last evening, I had the distinct feeling: who needs the Oscars? I've already seen the winning films, directors and actors and heard their acceptance speeches. The Oscar ceremony, which is not scheduled until six weeks from now, seems quite besides the point. Except for the fashion ("who are you wearing?" is the question of the moment), I am imagining that last night's Golden Globe winners will be simply re-doing their "best of" acceptance...

Bullet and Pen

Director: Mustafa Unlu.
One Portrait, Two Countries, Three Lives: The Life Story of Author Osman Necmi Gürmen Even starting from his familial roots, Turkish author Osman Necmi Gürmen lived caught between the two poles of East and West throughout every phase of his life. From a childhood in the environment of the Ottoman palatial court to a youth in the ruins of post-War Paris which remains one of the primary centers of Western knowledge and lifestyle; the remarkable course of Osman Necmi Gürmen’s life then took him to the extremely arduous conditions of tribal life in a village in Eastern Anatolia, where he found himself drawn into the middle of a bloody struggle for power. His life was defined by an aristocracy caught between the East and the West, a Western bourgeoisie reborn from its own ashes, and a feudal lifestyle that remained unchanged for centuries despite the ideals of the young Republic. He was not an “outsider” in any of these environments; he attempted to fulfil the social requirements and became a proprietor of each. Osman Necmi Gürmen is a man of letters who writes novels in French in France; he was also a feudal lord who was at the heart of a tribal battle for power in Siverek; he was one of the handful of intellectuals who founded a haven in Bodrum for what was to become one of the most important retreats for the petit bourgeoisie of the Turkish Republic after the 1960’s; and he is also an author who writes in Turkish, drawing inspiration from his own life and the extreme moments of Turkish history.

The Global Film Village: Julie and THE ROYAL FAMILY

user
by Marla LewinFriday night I saw The Royal Family on Broadway. It was all one would imagine of a grand old dynasty, like the Barrymores.  A family with an entourage, men falling in love with their own images, women unable to embrace love for fear of missing an opportunity for a good part. Shakespeare said “all the world is a stage”, and still today everyone likes to take a peek at the lives of those who actually get paid to act. The play is about the drama the characters create in their o...

32nd Starz Denver Film Festival Daily - November 21st, 2009

user
Day 9 Recap: Granted, the Starz Denver Film Festival in its entirety is a celebration in their honor, but we at the Denver Film Society literally toasted the talents who make all this possible during the Independent Filmmakers' Reception at the Postmodern last night, where the Lillet flowed like the chocolate atop the made-to-order treats from Crêpes 'n Crêpes. We didn't just put them in the spotlight, however-we also put a few of them on the spot during the Indie Film Roulette panel, as fe...
