Some are here to learn, some are here to share. Everyone is here in the name of film. Each have different experiences, backgrounds, and levels of expertise. As I sat in one panel about film financing Saturday I looked back at the packed auditorium and thought to myself, "Damn. Each of these people are here just because they want to make movies." They don't have money to make it happen, but they are here because they believe in what they want to do enough that they believe they can make...
THE SLEEPING BEAUTY (Catherine Breillat)
Kathryn Bigelow may have broken through the glass ceiling with her historic Best Director Oscar win last year for THE HURT LOCKER, but the door was not pushed wide open for women directors in the American film industry. Despite strong work by such American indie stalwarts as Lisa Cholodenko (THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT) and Nicole Holofcener (PLEASE GIVE), and the emergence of a number of debut directors (chief among them Debra Granik with WIN...
Mohammed moves to the mountain as the 2011 edition of the Sundance Film Festival, the only world class film event to take place at a ski resort, kicks off tomorrow, with not one film but a cross-section of some of the Festival's strongest and most buzzed titles. John Cooper, the new Sundance honcho since last year, has done away with the traditional single Opening Night Gala and replaced it with a series of films. "It was almost impossible to find a film that represented the entire...

The Writers Guild of America, the most prestigious membership organization for television and film writers, announced its nominations this week for top scribes of the year. The nominees, an indicator of the Oscar nods due later this month, are not without controversy. Several of the year's most celebrated films have had their scripts disqualified due to the WGA's convoluted "minimum basic agreement" rules. The injunctions are rather hard to explain but disqualify film scrip...

Just went you thought it was all fun and games and 3D at the movies, the WGA today announced its top choices for Screenwriting -- in advance of their WGA Award Show coming up in February. There are so many award-worthy movies, but as always, the comedy category gets a big snub.
What about THE OTHER GUYS?
And the nominees are...

As a media junkie (guilty as charged), I cannot help but be inundated this time of the year with all manner of critics pontificating on their "top ten" favorites of the year in the worlds of film, theater, music, art, fashion, politics, etc. While in the past, anxious readers waited with breath that is baited for what the New York Times writers and other major critics singled out as the year's best cultural attractions, the in...

"Modoki" is the Japanese word for "similar, yet different." Take for example the Tribeca Film Festival (April 21 to May 2, 2010), and October's New York Film Festival. Both are Manhattan cinema extravaganzas — whose overlaps end there. Populist Tribeca plays teriyaki to artsy NYFF's sashimi.
Nearly four decades the Lincoln Center event's junior, Tribeca was founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff as a goad to downtown development in th...

There's an amazing new 3D Catherine Keener movie out directed by Nicole Holofcener. You know, the real 3 D's? Death. Divorce. Disaster.
Rebecca Hall, Amanda Peet et Catherine Keener
PLEASE GIVE, which opens April 30, deals with all of these big special effects in life that most of us would rather escape from. "It's nice when we laugh," Keener noted, "because there is some very heavy material" in PLEASE G...
Not counting The Cocoanuts 's Marx brothers, any fool can thrive in Florida during boon times. To ride a bust takes vision, though, which must be what the Miami International Film Festival has. For its 27th edition (March 5-14, 2010), the Festival has reportedly seen a 35 percent bump in advance ticket sales, and surely that makes it a seer. The MIFF is produced and hosted by Miami-Dade College. With jobs down and campus admissions up, the only major film festival with such academic credentials...

With the Sundance Film Festival in almost its third decade, it is no surprise that there are certain filmmakers who have become Park City regulars and veterans of the American indie scene. One of the most successful of the women directors that Sundance has nurtured is Nicole Holofcener, who is back at the Festival with her latest film PLEASE GIVE. The writer/director was first at Sundance with her 1996 romantic drama WALKING AND TALKING.
Like that earlier film, PLEASE GIVE also...
