The Best of the Fest part 1 - Student Shorts, Monster Camp and Blood Car.

user
It is Monday, March 12th, and Cinequest has come to an end. This is a bitter-sweet moment; on the one hand I am already missing the frenetic buzz of running from film to forum and back to film, stopping to chat with filmmakers and attendees along the way and getting another caffeine dose in order to do it all over again. On the other hand, this now frees me up to actually get to the blog entries I have been meaning to assail you with, covering everything from my favorite festival films, to my fi...

A Typical Cinequest Day - Friday March 2nd

user
I thought I'd give you a quick run down of a typical day at the Cinequest Film Festival (at least for me).At 9:30 AM I was enjoying complimentary coffee in the foyer of the Rep Theater in San Jose, free coffee is always a great way to start the day. Then the Day of Distribution forums began with an insightful discussion on how to make an independent film that can be sold. This was followed by a great panel discussing the role of the media in promoting your film, and how to make the most from...

Flying To Portugal for the Troia International Film Festival

Sunday, June 4---Remember the good old days right after 9/11 when everyone was afraid to ride on airplanes, and those of us intrepid (or stupid) enough to continue flying off to film festivals always had empty seats around us? And airlines left on time? And the airline personnel were so happy to see a customer that you got treated like you were in first class (even though you were inevitably in the cheapo seats)? Well, I am here to tell you, brothers and sisters, that those times are long gone...

Jimmywork wins at Victoria Fest

user
Jimmywork, the controversial first feature from Francophone filmmaker Simon Sauvé, took the CHUM Television Award for Best Canadian First Feature, along with $2,000 cash. A cross between film noir, biopic and cinema vérité, the film follows Sauvé’s neighbour, Jimmy Webster, a gambler, drinker and hopeless schemer with endless ambition, but dishonourable intentions. Festival Director, Kathy Kay said it was important to recognize this film for the award, “Jimmywork sparked a great deal of ...

London Film Fest 4 Chaplin keystones

user
In the restored prints section a group of four early Chaplin shorts, all from the year 1914, were shown with live piano accompaniment. These restorations were made with the cooperation of film archives and collections all over the world and, presumably, show the films in a condition as close as it is possible to achieve, to the form in which audiences saw them ninety years ago. Even the printed inter-titles have been reconstructed, presumably, as originally shown. These films were all made at ...
