Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Gemma Deerfield

ME: Hello to all my readers! I want to introduce you to the great actress/writer/producer Gemma Deerfiled here today to speak with us about her past, present and future film adventures.

GEMMA DEERFIELD speaks in detail about each film.

Breathe (2009) - I was asked by Nick Winter (the director) if I would lIke to get involved as a producer. They had a few odd jobs that needed sorting and a lack of man power so I stepped in. I was only an assistant producer. I helped with location scouting and catering mostly. One part of the shoot was a week in a huge manor house and I was the resident chef. I told Nick that as an actor I also wanted a role but the film had been cast to I accepted a walk on role. That said I would never do it again, its not worth it for me unless its a real acting part but you live and learn.

Kindness of Strangers (2010)-this is a beautiful film but I admit my role is  very small, but at least it is pivotal. Initially I auditioned for a larger part, which I got, but as they were filming the director made some changes and cut my character. She wanted to work with me so offered my a role she didn't expect me to take but I also wanted to work with Deborah (Hadfield) and so took the role. I'm glad I did as I have accepted the female lead in her next project which is said to take place on a yatch in the med, so very exciting!

New Beginnings (2009) - my biggest disaster, but I don't take if off my CV because it taught me so much. Technically the film was not good enough to be finished, which spoiled the whole film. The biggest shame about that is that the acting (and I'm not talking about me here) was great. I was thrilled with the cast I put together and we actually had a blast making it. It's been suggested that I re-do it but I'm not sure I have the same level of passion for it that I once did. My idedas are much more ambitious than it was in the beginning.

Jesus versus the Messiah - my very first film role, I play the female lead; a woman called Sally who is on the run. This is a film I am very proud of, its certainly kooky but its very enjoyable.  I though the director did an incredible job of making the Scotish Hills look like they cam straight out of a western. Bitch of a shoot though, absolutely freezing and cramped living conditions for what seemed like forever. We were all suffering for our art on that one! But i think we all agreed it was worth it.

I have written a short that is currently being edited called "Sweet Sunset". This was filmed in the UK and in Bahrain. I write, produced and starred in that too which will be put better than my last effort. After going to Cannes this year I was asked to submit the film to the Qatar Film Festival which I have been invited to attend.

I have just wrapped on a film called Marvin's Song - filmed in Accrington, made by Workhouse Pictures, directed by Stephen Murphy.

I am currently producing a supernatural series and a thriller feature called Violet and Trauma respectively. I have found all the funding I need for the feature and am hoping to drum up interest in the series (to be filmed in Manchester very soon...). I have co-written both scripts but am using a pseudonym as I want to be known as an actor and am worried all the other stuff will distract from that. Trauma will be ready to shoot as soon as the lead role is cast.

ME: Thanks Gemma! Keep going! You're rocking it! And I know that within the next few years you'll be at the top of your game! You rock! Thank you! :-) Vanessa August 14, 2010
