One Portrait, Two Countries, Three Lives: The Life Story of Author Osman Necmi Gürmen Even starting from his familial roots, Turkish author Osman Necmi Gürmen lived caught between the two poles of East and West throughout every phase of his life. From a childhood in the environment of the Ottoman palatial court to a youth in the ruins of post-War Paris which remains one of the primary centers of Western knowledge and lifestyle; the remarkable course of Osman Necmi Gürmen’s life then took him to the extremely arduous conditions of tribal life in a village in Eastern Anatolia, where he found himself drawn into the middle of a bloody struggle for power. His life was defined by an aristocracy caught between the East and the West, a Western bourgeoisie reborn from its own ashes, and a feudal lifestyle that remained unchanged for centuries despite the ideals of the young Republic. He was not an “outsider” in any of these environments; he attempted to fulfil the social requirements and became a proprietor of each. Osman Necmi Gürmen is a man of letters who writes novels in French in France; he was also a feudal lord who was at the heart of a tribal battle for power in Siverek; he was one of the handful of intellectuals who founded a haven in Bodrum for what was to become one of the most important retreats for the petit bourgeoisie of the Turkish Republic after the 1960’s; and he is also an author who writes in Turkish, drawing inspiration from his own life and the extreme moments of Turkish history.

Burnt Oranges is an award-winning pioneering documentary. It is the first of its kind – created by a woman in exile from her native country, Argentina – who returns to re-map thirty years of obscured history. Through an innovative interweaving of poetic personal narrative and documentary genres, the film confronts a painful past as well as affirms the strength of human perseverance for human rights and justice.

Director Silvia Malagrino examines the long-term effects and repercussions of Argentina's 1970s state terrorism through a combination of intimate witness narration, interviews, documentary and re-created footage. The narration is based on factual letters written by the director Silvia Malagrino and writer Monica Flores Correa, both friends who fled the country at different times.

Revealing the current vibrating life in Buenos Aires through the eyes of a long-gone native, the film also records and uncovers compelling testimonies of resistance, transformation, and hope. Burnt Oranges reminds us of the global necessity to defend human rights and democratic values.

Fundamental to the film are the voices of members of Argentine human rights organizations:  Mothers of the Disappeared, Grandmothers of the Disappeared, Sons and Daughters of the Disappeared (HIJOS), and also governmental figures of the 1976-83 military dictatorship who explain their position. Other witnesses include Bob Cox - the former chief editor of the daily Buenos Aires Herald, and Alicia Partnoy – a poet and a survivor of torture in a detention center, both currently living in the U.S. 

Together, these voices contribute to our understanding of core questions of human action, the potential for creation and destruction, and the necessity of accountability.

Thus begins the journey of Neha?s recovery, unexpected but not impossible. A journey that explores unconditional love and support from Ayesha, Neha's older sister. Ayesha?s immense belief in her sister and undying faith in their sisterly bond becomes the spine of the film. Neha eventually sheds her inhibitions of insecurities and becomes an inspiration to other people through her independence. Sometimes even the eyes that see may not have the vision to inspire or be inspired ? it unfortunately takes a tragic happening to realise that life is not to be taken for granted. That life is a blessing to be counted and appreciated everyday and to be celebrated with unconditional love.
