Sundance 2011 Crowns Its Winners

Winning an award at the Sundance Film Festival is no small accomplishment. The competition to just get into the Festival is fierce (150 films chosen out of over 2000 submissions.....ouch). However, winning the top prizes is still no assurance that the films will be widely seen or make any dent at the box office. Some years, the top prize winners have barely registered beyond the festival circuit. In others, such as last year's winner WINTER'S BONE, the win at Sundance led to an outstanding showi...

Piotr: A Mistranslation

Director: Martín Seeger.
Piotr Herroll’s family had to leave Nacrovia and now lives in exile in Santiago de Chile. Young Piotr is sent to find work. A friend points him out that the Chilean State supports artists; so, he comes up with a play about the story of his unknown country. This carries several problems: he must have Chilean actors, who are less concerned about the meaning of his work. Also, his citizenship credentials are not very reliable. And the language barrier will result in a series of mix ups that will end altering the play. The film is spoken in a made up language, Nacrovese. The continuing use of subtitles is incorporated into the plot games, making Piotr Herroll a unpredictable hero and turning the film into a sharp comedy about the essence of the Chilean self.

Our goal is to provide a film experience that is thought provoking and joyful for an audience hungry for alternatives to the multiplex.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
We invite filmmakers to join us in our celebration of cinema at the Fresno Film Festival at the historic 750-seat art deco Tower Theater, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Located mid-way between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Fresno is the largest inland city in California, and home to several colleges and universities. Fresno is both the center of the largest farm economy in the U.S. and the gateway to Yosemite National Park and the spectacular Sierra Nevada mountains. Fresno is home to one of the most ethnically diverse populations in California, with large Latino and Asian populations. Our festival encourages films that will appeal to diverse and underrepresented audiences.

Fresno Filmworks is a community-based non-profit group committed to showing independent, experimental and foreign films in Fresno. We are supported through the Fresno Arts Council and have a large and committed audience that attends our regular monthly film screenings.
