What is the role of film in a world suffering from illiteracy and a steep decline in book-reading?
"This is a social issue that needs to be addressed in a wider context. Well publicized junk, usually from Hollywood, pushes out serious cinema and takes over the time that should be given to reading or visiting an art gallery. The best film-makers can do is to make good films. It is important to talk about truth and beauty in our films, rather than putting bums on ci...

Today is Earth Day…..in fact it is the 40th anniversary of the date inaugurated in 1970 to foster awareness about ecology and the environment. In its inaugural year, the concern about “saving the planet” was secondary to the protestors energizing college campuses in a push to end the war in Vietnam. In those days, Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of legal consequences or bad press. Air pollution wa...

Who does not remember the past is condemned to repeat it.In events around Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK,we think we have seen every grim aspect of the persecutions visited upon the Jewish people in the middle of the last century,(although the day itself-27th January-is increasingly being designated a commemoration of genocide in general and not exclusively of the horrors instigated by the Nazis)-yet in a marvellously uplifting screening held (on 25th January 2011) at the recently revamped...
