Fight or Flight, a new film by George MendelukFrom the director of Desperate Escape (2009) and Riddles of the Sphinx (2008) George Mendeluk is here to present to us his latest film Fight or Flight (2010) in an exclusive one-to-one dialogue about his soon to be released film. ME: So, George, can you tell us all about Fight or Flight? What is it about in sum and what can you tell us at this point to whet our appetite for your next opus? GEORGE: Fight or Flight is a science fiction action film about a terrorist organization who explode a bomb in a federal building which unleashes a secret warfare gas that makes people either incredibly aggressive or passive. Our hero Cale- played by Jason London- tries to organize an escape and attempts to rescue his daughter who was left in the day care center on the fourth floor at the time of the explosion. Basically, the gas turns people into zombies! ME: Zombies! Yes! And were there any other films that you love that might have inspired you to take on this particular story? Or music videos or real life experiences, or whatever the muses may be? GEORGE: 28 Days Later, Die Hard, the 9/11 Tragedy in New York inspired me to make the movie. ME: Haha! Cool! Where is the film shot and how has the production gone up to now? Has it been smooth or full of inconveniences? GEORGE: We filmed the film in Lafayette Louisiana and did some second unit work in Portland Oregon. It is the first production of a slate of films from a new company that I formed MKM Entertainment. The people in Lafayette- especially the city fathers- were simply incredible to work with. We had enormous co operation from the police department, the fire department- a very hard working dedicated crew and a cadre of talent. ME: How is it working with this awesome cast? You really have a lineup! And you're son Alexander Mendeluk is acting in it as well! GEORGE: It was one of the best experiences for me as a director to work with a cast of the caliber of Fight or Flight. You don't have to work that hard in getting a performance. You just create an atmosphere that's conducive for them to create, and work on character back story so that they can bring an attitude to each scene. I had never worked by Judd Nelson and Tommy Howell and always wanted to so that was a treat. As for Robert Carradine, I had worked with his late brother David on "Kung Fu", who became a friend so it was poignant for me. Robert is his own man and actor, but he has David's love of the craft and a prickly side that I find endearing. My son Alexander acts in the film. He has appeared in "Twilight" and "New Moon". This is a memorable part for him. And everyone remarks on how good he is in the picture. He's a teen heart throb. After 37 years as a director, I think I can say that I have an eye for talent. He is very serious about his work and is destined for a successful career. ME: Wow! Congrats to your son Alexander who plays Ryan! So, when will the film be released and what can you tell us in closing about Fight or Flight that might inspire audiences to get up and out and go see your film? GEORGE: The film will be released this year, probably around Christmas as the story takes place on Christmas Eve. Inclosing, I am proud of this film and the people who helped me realize it. Although it is a "popcorn muncher", there is a subtle political message which is very timely; namely, we all have to be vigilant as citizens to make sure our government -no matter where we reside-doesn't rob us of our freedom. "Zombies" are a metaphor for the sleeping masses! ME: Great, George! Thanks a heap for taking the time for sharing your film with us. My interest is piqued and I'll be looking for it upon release! All the best on Fight or Flight and all of your, and your son's, future artistic endeavors! Interview by Vanessa McMahon; August 01, 2010.
