Uranium Film Festival

The International Uranium Film Festival of Rio de Janeiro is dedicated to all films (movies, documentaries, animated films, image films, art, fiction and non-fiction) about any nuclear issue: uranium mining, nuclear power plants, nuclear accidents, atomic bombs, nuclear waste, radioactive risks: From Hiroshima to Fukushima. It is an annual and global film festival with travelling festivals in other countries and cities.

The best and most important films of the year receive the festival Award or a Special Recognition. The Uranium Film Festival Award is a piece of art created by Brazilian waste-material-artist Getúlio Damado, who lives and works in the famous artist quarter Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro. Getúlio uses waste material that he finds in the streets of Santa Teresa and old, broken watches to remember the first atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima. Watches in Hiroshima stopped exactly at 8:15 in the morning when the A-bomb exploded on August 6th, 1945.

Five years Fukushima, 30 years Chernobyl, 37 years Three Mile Island. In 2016 the International Uranium Film Festival will be held in Los Angeles in March, in Rio de Janeiro in May and in Berlin in September.
The festival is interested in any film about nuclear energy, nuclear accidents and use and risks of radioactivity in general. From the Three Mile Island nuclear accident to Chernobyl, from the radioactive accident in Goiânia (Brazil) to Fukushima. The deadline for film submissions is December 31, 2015 for LA and the final deadline for the festival in Rio is January 31, 2016.  The best nuclear films in the following categories: Best Feature  Documentary, Best Short Documentary, Best Fiction, Best Short Fiction, Best Animation will receive the festival's Yellow Oscar Award.
Festival locations and dates 2016

Los Angeles: March 24th to 28th the festival will take place in two iconic Hollywood venues: The Egyptian Theatre and the Sunset Gower Studios.

Rio de Janeiro: May 20th to 28th, the festival will take place in the cinema of Rio de Janeiro's famous Modern Art Museum (MAM Rio Cinemateca).

Now in its 6th year, the International Uranium Film Festival - known as the Atomic Cannes -  is an annual celebration honoring films tackling a difficult but globally important issue: Atomic power, radioactivity and nuclear accidents: From Hiroshima to Fukushima, from uranium mining to nuclear waste, from Three Mile Island nuclear accident to Chernobyl.  The Uranium Film Festival recognizes the achievements of nuclear independent filmmakers and promotes the finest films of the year to a wider audience.
