THAT TIME OF YEAR
Contemporary World Cinema, Denmark
Paprika Steen, directs and stars in THAT TIME OF YEAR – a taut dark comedy about a dysfunctional family spending Christmas Eve together. This film marks Steen’s third time in the director’s chair and her first time directing herself. With her latest, Steen demonstrates her incredible range as both a director and a performer – bringing us a film that is just as dramatic as it is funny.
Michael Noer returns to the festival for the second year in a row. This time with a film called BEFORE THE FROST – a stark period drama set in the Danish countryside and starring legendary Danish actor Jesper Christensen (you will recognize him as “Mr. White” in the James Bond films). After his first foray into making an English language film last year (i.e. PAPILLON), Noer returns to his Danish roots with his fifth feature film, which contemplates challenging questions about class and how far a person will go to ensure their survival. Noer also co-wrote the script.
