The Sound of Us

The Sound of Us" illustrates that during this critical time in world and U.S. history, music gives sound to hope and courage, allows us to grieve and be honest, and is the great, universal language that unites us all.

As the world grapples with unrest the profound truth remains that, through music, we are not alone.

The Sound of Us weaves inspiring stories about the beauty and goodness of music with interviews and performances by artists such as Ben Folds, Sarah McLachlan, Avery*Sunshine, Eric Whitacre, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Hiromi, Antonio Sanchez, Butch Walker, Will Wells, Patti Smith, and many more. Combined, these powerful vignettes illustrate how music heals us, gives us hope for the future through our children, keeps our heritage and history alive, allows us to have the most difficult of conversations, sheds light on current struggles, and continues to invite us back to the thing that unites us all - music.

The film is directed by Chris Gero, a Grammy nominated, American music industry executive, concert producer, record producer, songwriter, film director and composer, founder of Yamaha Entertainment Group of America and Chief Artist Relations Executive for Yamaha Artist Relations Group

Director Biography - Chris Gero

Chris Gero is a Grammy nominated, American music industry executive, concert producer, record producer, songwriter, film director and composer, founder of Yamaha Entertainment Group of America and Chief Artist Relations Executive for Yamaha Artist Relations Group. Gero is responsible for the management and branding of Yamaha's global roster, having signed more than 3,600 artists to contract to date. Gero oversees Yamaha's artist collaborations, including Elton John, Alicia Keys, Paul McCartney, Norah Jones, Josh Groban, Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, John Legend, and Ben Folds.

Upon its founding by Gero in 2012, Yamaha Entertainment Group is the succession of Yamaha Corporate Artist Affairs, which Gero also founded in 2001.

In 2000, Gero produced "Michael McDonald: A Gathering of Friends," a concert hosted by Jeff Bridges. The show consisted of McDonald performing duets with a variety of well known artists, including Patti LaBelle, Christopher Cross, James Ingram, Kenny Loggins, The Doobie Brothers and Jeff Bridges himself. A DVD of the concert was released on Image Entertainment a year later in 2001 and went on to become an extremely successful PBS Special.

On September 29, 2012, Gero oversaw the filming of Sarah McLachlan’s special encore performance for a Disklavier TV broadcast from her house in Canada. The performance footage was hosted on Disklavier TV so people who own Yamaha Disklavier pianos can have the piano reproduce her performance in their own homes.

Gero produced and directed the full length concert film of Elton John's "The Million Dollar Piano", which was released through Cinema Live on March 18 and March 26, 2014 in 1,200 movie theaters throughout the world. Gero also produced and directed the 2014 DVD "Making The Million Dollar Piano," an hour-long documentary on the making of the custom-designed Yamaha piano featured in Elton John’s Las Vegas show, "Million Dollar Piano." A short form of the DVD is part of a bundle package with John's album "The Diving Board," released by Best Buy. Yamaha Entertainment Group also produced a DVD release of the live show. The DVD was released July 1, 2014 and distributed by Eagle Rock Entertainment.

Gero directed and produced "Nathan East For the Record" – a documentary about Nathan East, one of the most recorded bass players in the history of music. The 80-minute film showcases the recording of Nathan East's No.1 debut solo album, 30 years in the making. Eric Clapton, Quincy Jones, Phil Collins, Lionel Richie, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Vince Gill, David Foster and Don Was are among those featured."Nathan East For the Record" has gone on to win over 15 awards to date.

Director Statement

This is a very personal introspective of my own life through the lens of how the unexplainable power of music transcends the understanding of what music truly means to us as humans.
I have a very unique perspective on this, being on both sides of the creative spectrum in business – both as a creative and a corporate executive – as well as having had a very unorthodox and unconventional childhood that only music led me out of. What would otherwise have been a very predictable, mediocre excuse of blaming my upbringing on the misfortunes of the time, I was offered something very magical and special for me through the remarkable connection I made through music, when all seemed lost.
When all was lost music was there.
Through this very notion, music challenges me to look deeper and this film challenged me to ask an unanswerable question: what is music, what is it to me?
For me, music is the sound that truly expresses the idea “what is love?” – another truly inexpressible theory. I can’t put it in words, what I feel when I say, “I love you.” We simply know we are in love and, like music, we are because we simply are in it.
I can’t actually prove I love you outside of the truth of the testing of those words, and the moment my hands press down on piano keys, the very same thing happens. The same commitment is made. Together, those two very truths meet time.
Music opens a window to the world of my most vulnerable self, truly a doorway into the soul. The notes don’t take into account division, hatred, race, hurt, anger. They transcend, bind together, and somehow find ways to celebrate what so often divides us. I cannot explain that; I just know that the moment I play a single note for someone else to receive, I am transmitting from a place no one else gets to see unless I give myself a very special permission to be human and exposed, and only through the language of music. It is through this unique language that we can communicate across barriers, across time, between souls.
If I were a bear, I would play the violin before I ate you….. both of us would cry before nature found its place! Music brings experiences to another place and another level, beyond this physical world.
Music ultimately shows us we are human – empathetic, genuinely kind, and together. We are music because we are human.
