Vanessa Kirby elicits male and female gaze in VENEZIA 77 competition

Vanessa Kirby is in two films at Venezia 77 -both surrounding the loss of a child. Pieces of a Woman by the Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó includes Martha's overbearing obnoxious husband (Shia LaBeoufcaring in a 25 minute home birth scene with a midwife (Molly Parker) that is later brought up on charges. Tallie is slowly being annihilated by her husband in The World to Come by Norwegian director by Mona Fastvold in rural 18th century New York is the more powerful film. This world to come is a world where two women can live and love and not just in their imagination - Kirby and Katherine Waterston as Abigail, a grieving mother who has lost her child and whose emotional core comes to life with Tallie . Pieces of a Woman is interpreted by the director and husband (Shia LaBeoufthat seem to "manhandle the birth", whereas The World to Come puts the relationship between in the women focus and their husbands in the background yet as firm characters. Here is a clear difference between material adapted for the screen in The World to Come - Jim Shepard; Pieces of a Woman - Kata Wéber revealing a clear female and male gaze. The narrative is forced and confusing in Pieces of a Woman, and cohesive with clear emotional content in The World to Come. Producer is Brady Corbet who has brought to Lido The Childhood of a Leader (2015) and Vox Dux (2018) both cowritten by Mona Fastvold. This is a director/writer team who are putting out brilliant work that is always honored at Venice.
