ABOUT THE FILM FESTIVAL
The International Freethought Film Festival is a niche film festival for the bold. Promoting reason through film is our mission. Examples of themes in the Freethought niche are those that challenge what some societies and cultures deem unchallengeable, such as religion or government policies. The examination of truth claims that are of interest to skeptics, such as paranormal claims, alternative medicine, UFO's, psychics and astrology, fits this niche. Films that shed light on Human Rights violations, and stories of brave women and men, who affect positive change in society with a humanistic approach, are a part the freethought niche. The clash between scientific findings and religious beliefs is a common theme as well.

The International Freethought Film Festival is in its second season. The first event took place at the Tampa Theatre in May of 2011. There were ten screenings in all over the weekend, with seven full-length features and 39 short films. The categories of films that were selected were live action, animation, documentary, experimental features and shorts. With film titles like "The Nature of Existence", Creator of God: A Brain Surgeon's Story", "The God Complex", "The Evangelist", "(R)evolution" and "Godless", the subject matter is not for the faint of heart. The critical examination of religion was the dominant theme the first season. IFFF boasts the U.S. premiere of Tim Minchin's short film, "Storm", which brilliantly runs the skeptic's gamut of questioning alternative medicine, homeopathy, religion, psychics, and mediums among others.

Official film selections get exposure outside of just the film festival. Freethinkers around the globe are seeking more films that reflect their idealism in entertaining ways, in addition to documentaries. The Freethought Film Festival Foundation works with national and international organizations to share these films and recommend them to members of their organization. Many are inspired to put on similar film festivals and many have already approached us for assistance with content. The IFFF will launch your film into an eager new audience within the secular movement.

Many film festivals select films that generally steer clear of major controversy. Submitting to those festivals may be a waste of a submission fee for you. If your film reflects any of these ideals, submit it. We do not care about controversy, because freedom of expression completely negates the concept of having the courage of your convictions. We strongly believe that rationalistic and artistic are not mutually exclusive.
