Four Months 3 weeks 2 days The opening film of the festival

The International Film Festival of India will open with the most celebrated film of the year ‘FOUR MONTHS, THREE WEEKS, TWO DAYS" directed by Cristian Mungiu from Romania.  The film won the prestigious Palme D'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival this year and has received wide critical acclaim all over the world.  The Director Cristian Mungiu and the leading actress of the film Anamaria Marinca will attend the gala opening ceremony on 23rd November 2007 at the Kala Academy in Goa.  The film deals with the subject of abortion in Romania, examining its impact on the lives of a girl and her family.

One of the first sign of freedom in Romania after the fall of communism was to make abortion legal again. In the first two years nearly one million abortions took place in a country of 20 million people.

‘FOUR MONTHS, THREE WEEKS, TWO DAYS,' is a powerful film from Romania, by Cristian Mungiu with tremendous performances from Anamaria Marinca as Otilia and Laura Vasiliu, playing 'Gabita', in a story of abortion and the effect on family and friendship.

Romania, final days of communism, Otilia and Gabita are students; they share a room in a hall of residence in Bucharest. When Gabita decides to terminate her pregnancy - a crime in Romania from 1966 until 1989 - her fiercely loyal university dorm-mate and best friend, Otilia, accompanies her to a hotel room to be "helped" by one Mr. Bebe, the only black-market practitioner they can afford. When the foul Bebe requests something far more precious than money for his services, the girls descend into a harrowing journey of the soul that is nothing short of shattering. Taking place over a single Saturday in 1987, the film holds an enormous emotional gravitas. It evolves into a profound exploration not only of sorority in harsh times but of choices and responsibility when options are few.

Director: Cristian Mungiu has directed ‘OCCIDENT' in the year 2002. In the year 2005, he directed ‘LOST AND FOUND'. He presented two movies in the Cannes Film Festival namely ‘OCCIDENT' AND ‘ FOUR MONTHS, THREE WEEKS, TWO DAYS'. He is the first Romanian Director to win the Golden Palm in the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 for his film ‘ FOUR MONTHS, THREE WEEKS, TWO DAYS'. He studied directing at the University of Film in Bucharest.
