Japanese super production “xxxHOLIC” opens Fantasporto 42nd edition in world premiere

Festival opener and in competition in the Official Fantastic Cinema Section

Porto International Film Festival | Fantasporto 2022, which will take place between April 1 and 10 at Teatro Rivoli, will have as its Official Opening film the world premiere of the Japanese super production “xxxHOLIC”, the live-action film adaptation of CLAMP 's xxxHOLiC manga , a film that will also be in competition at the official sections of Fantastic Cinema and Orient Express. The film will open in Japanese theaters on April 29 and stars popular actors and musicians in Asia, such as Ryunosuke Kamiki who will play Kimihiro Watanuki or Kou Shibasaki who will play Yūko Ichihara. Directed by Mika Ninagawa (Sakuran, Helter Skelter) and scripted by Erika Yoshida. CLAMP launched the original xxxHOLiC manga in Young Magazine and Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine from 2003 to 2011, although the manga underwent a name change in 2009 to xxxHOLiC: Rō. Subsequently, the publication returned to Weekly Young Magazine in 2013 where it was on release until 2017, the year in which it went on indefinite hiatus. So far, it has a total of 23 volumes and a sequel is planned . The manga inspired two anime adaptations produced by Production IG. The twenty-four-episode first season premiered in April 2006, followed by a second season titled xxxHOLiC Kei in June 2008, with thirteen episodes. The franchise also inspired a live-action series produced in Japan and released in February 2013 with eight episodes.

Living alone after the death of his parents, Kimihiro Watanuki is a high school student who can see otherworldly creatures that are attracted to him. His days are plagued by these annoyances and he wants to get rid of them. One fateful day, as Kimihiro is pursued by a horde of spirits, he encounters Yuuko Ichihara, the owner of a supposed shop, who claims to be able to grant wishes. Yuuko offers to grant Kimihiro one as long as he pays an adequate price. So begins Kimihiro's time working in his shop to earn what he needs for his wish. In Yuuko's job, he must become more involved with spirits and the supernatural before leaving that world behind. How will he fare in the inexplicable encounters that await him?

About Fantasporto

Dorminsky Mario

The Oporto International Film Festival, specializes in fantasy and science-fiction films in its Official Competitive section.
This Festival also includes the 18th New Directors Week with an Official Competition and a Retrospective section. The Festival’s director, Mário Dorminsky, is preparing, with the help of the Portuguese Film Institute, a program with Portuguese Films for the benefit of the foreign guests in Fantasporto.
The Festival runs now in 5 theatres (2,600 seats altogether ) and screens nearly new 200 feature films each year. The press coverage of the Festival is made by all the most important Portuguese newspapers, radio stations and television networks and by foreign specialized press. This allows press dossiers of about 5000 clippings every year and represents a unique media coverage in Portugal for similar cultural events.

Almost 110,000 entries, per year is the average of the Festival’s past editions.
