TAKESHI KITANO to be honored at Far East Film Festival 24

On Friday the 29th of April, the Japanese legend

will receive the Golden Mulberry Award for

Lifetime Achievement on the stage of the

Far East Film Festival in Udine.

Press release for the 18th of March, 2022

For immediate publication/release

UDINE – There are artists - actors, writers, singers - who walk by our side our whole life. Artists who never abandon us and who always satisfy our need for beauty. We find them in a movie, or a book, or a song, and it feels like coming home – like stopping the hands of time. No matter how much we change or how far we move, there they are. Reassuring. Solid. Necessary. And without a shadow of a doubt, Takeshi Kitano is one of them.

For Far East Film Festival 24, a truly incredible dream (and that's no exaggeration) comes true: the dream of bringing one of the giants of world cinema to Udine. An artist who for more than thirty years has been walking side by side with anyone who loves cinema - and not just Asian cinema. A legendary artist who on Friday the 29th of April will receive the Golden Mulberry Award for Lifetime Achievement on the stage of FEFF 24, and make the hearts of the audience sing! The disciples of the most noir Kitano, who discovered him through Violent Cop, the disciples of the most romantic Kitano, who discovered him through A Scene at the Sea, and the disciples who have discovered and continue to discover him over the years...

«It’s for me a great honor to receive the Golden Mulberry Award of the Udine Far East Film Festival – mister Kitano says. I am truly overwhelmed. I would like to thank and to extend all my gratitude to the festival’s organizers. I am so glad to receive this important Award in Italy and to enjoy this celebration on your side, in Udine. At the same time, we are in the middle of a very difficult time, of war, scars and sufferings in Europe. I feel so sad for all these sufferings and terrified by the war in Ukraine. In this moment of uncertainty and more than ever, I hope that we can all remember that culture and especially movies can link cultures and unify humans all together. I am extremely proud to receive this distinction, going straight to my heart. Thank you to the Udine Film Festival and to all my Italian and European friends».

Udine's Festival crowns Takeshi Kitano for his thrilling journey across genres and styles and between cinema and television but also between poetry and literature, including absolute masterpieces such as Sonatine, Kids Return, Hana-bi (Golden Lion at Venice in 1997), Kikujiro, Dolls and Zatoichi (Silver Lion in 2003) as well as his beloved hard-boiled cult saga Outrage. Without of course forgetting the brutal sergeant he plays alongside David Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto in Nagisa Oshima's famous Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, or his incursions into Hollywood in Johnny Mnemonic and Ghost in the Shell.

It would be impossible to condense (or more accurately, trap) in a few words the thousand souls and the thousand lives of Kitano: actor, director, screenwriter, writer, painter, comedian and presenter. Much easier to wait for the dreams that "Beat" Takeshi offers us on the 29th of April.
