Liev Schreiber to Attend 2022 Sun Valley Film Festival Opening Night World Premiere of "Across the River and Into the Trees"

Liev Schreiber to Attend 2022 Sun Valley Film Festival Opening Night World Premiere Special Screening in Honor of Hemingway Adaptation, Across the River and Into the Trees

The Sun Valley Film Festival will mark its opening night on Wednesday, March 30, with a film that resonates with the area’s cultural history, most significantly as the final home of Ernest Hemingway. Filmed in Venice, Italy during lockdown, the narrative feature Across the River and Into the Trees is a long-awaited adaptation of Hemingway’s final novel and NY Times bestseller. Star Liev Schreiber is expected to attend this world premiere special screening with the film’s producer Robert MacLean and additional cast and crew. Schreiber will also participate in a Coffee Talk on Thursday, March 31. The Sun Valley Film Festival will take place in-person from March 30 - April 3 and will screen more than 25 narrative and documentary features.

“Hemingway came to Sun Valley to hunt and fish, to write and socialize, and the area is forever tied to the legacy of this most quintessential of American novelists,” said Teddy Grennan, founder and executive director of the Sun Valley Film Festival. “We are thrilled to welcome the talent cast and crew from the including star Liev Schreiber to mark this special screening of ‘Across the River and Into the Trees,’ and to share it with Sun Valley locals as well as all of this year’s attendees.”

The last full-length novel that Hemingway published in his lifetime, Across the River and Into the Trees is a post-WWII drama that follows an American Army officer, Colonel Richard Cantwell (Schreiber), damaged both physically and mentally by the war, whose unraveling plans to spend a quiet weekend in Venice are upended by a chance encounter with a remarkable young woman. Cantwell is a semi-autobiographical character partially based on Hemingway’s friend, Colonel Charles T. Lanham (Hemingway had his own relationship with Italian aristocrat Adriana Ivancich).  The film also stars Matilda De Angelis, Danny Huston, Josh Hutcherson, and Laura Morante. Produced by Robert MacLean of Tribune Pictures, the adapted screenplay by BAFTA-award-winning screenwriter Peter Flannery is directed by award-winning Spanish director Paula Ortiz.

This narrative feature will join the previously announced opening night documentary, National Geographic Documentary Films’ Fire of Love, directed by Sara Dosa. Additional festival highlights include Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler receiving the Vision Award, Danny Strong receiving the Pioneer Award presented by Variety, Dr. Nathalie Dougé as recipient of National Geographic’s Further Award, and Rising Star Award honorees, the cast of Outer Banks: Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Austin North, Drew Starkey and Carlacia Grant. The festival will close with the CNN documentary Navalny, directed by Daniel Roher, who is expected to attend with the film.
