A musical documentary depicting the against-all-odds rise of Staff Benda Bilili, a dynamic band of street musicians from the Democratic Republic of Congo who became beloved stars of the "world music" circuit. Staff Benda Bilili was followed for five years, from their first rehearsal to their success at various festivals around the world. Charting the group's progress, 'Benda Bilili!' tells the real-life story of a dream that has become reality, spanning humble beginnings in Kinshasa and a triumphant European tour.
Duration of the film: 85 min
Language: Lingala (with EN/NL/FR subtitles)

'Soul Power' is a 2008 documentary film about the Zaire '74 music festival that took place in Kinshasa in September 1974. Zaire '74 brought together a unique group of soul and R&B artists from America, such as James Brown, Bill Withers and B.B. King, as well as some African musicians like Miriam Makeba and Afrisa. The festival was held together with the no less legendary fight between Foreman and Muhammad Ali, the 'Rumble in the Jungle'. For almost all the Black Americans, it was their first visit to Africa, the "Motherland", of which they had rather naive and idealistic ideas beforehand. However, the harsh life in the streets of Kinshasa and the hard hand of Mobutu soon made them change their minds.
Duration of the film: 93 min
Language: English (with NL/FR subtitles)

The Rumba Kings (2021)
Alan Brain, DR Congo, 94 min.
Gesproken: Frans & Lingala. Ondertiteld: English.

'The Rumba Kings' celebrates the epic quest of Congolese Rumba. The music that helped the Congo fight colonial oppression, find freedom and forge a new identity. In the 1950s, when the Democratic Republic of the Congo was a Belgian colony, a generation of Congolese musicians fused traditional African rhythms with Afro-Cuban music to create the electrifying beat of Congolese Rumba. A beat that would carry Congo through its independence and captivate the entire African continent with its infectious groove, mesmerizing guitar licks, and smooth vocals. 'The Rumba Kings' features music by Franco Luambo & OK Jazz, Grand Kallé & African Jazz and Docteur Nico & African Fiesta Sukisa.
Duration of the film: 94 min
Language: French and Lingala (with EN subtitles)
