French Senegalese director and actress Mati Diop made it very clear that we have a lot of work to do as an industry for she is the first Black female director in competition in the history of the film festival. When asked how she feels about this, she responded by stating that it feels very late to be having this achievement and this should have been something done long before the year of 2019.
Her film, Atlantique, follows a group construction workers from Dakar looking to leave their home country of Senegal by sea in hopes of reaching opportunity elsewhere. Featured in the film is a primarily Senegalese cast with actors and actresses who are very new to the industry. Actress Mame Sané explained her initial exposure to the industry mentioning "I only used to watch tv shows and movies were not a thing that I had much experience in watching." Actor Amadou Mbow also shared his thoughts saying "when I was younger, being in the film industry was never something I really dreamed about. That was until I met Mati (Diop)." It looks like bright things lie ahead for Diop and her cast.
