Top 6 Actors of the 2000s: Revisiting the Hollywood Stars

The 2000s marked a significant period in the film industry, with the rise of new technologies, changing storytelling techniques, and the emergence of new talented actors on the scene left right and centre. During this decade, actors played a crucial role in shaping the success and impact of movies. From their captivating performances to their ability to embody diverse characters, these actors captivated audiences worldwide, and we wanted to honour some of the best of them with our picks for the top 6 actors of the 2000s.

Though many of these actors started their careers before the millennium, the impression they have left over the last few decades is what we wanted to focus on. This included their acting skills, versatility, range, box office success, critical acclaim of their movies, and their influence on popular culture. Each actor on this list left an enduring impact on the industry and contributed to the cinematic landscape that we know and love.

Leonardo DiCaprio

The man who finally got an Oscar - we were all rooting for him! Leonardo DiCaprio's remarkable performances in the past decades solidified his status as one of the finest actors of his generation. In the years that followed his breakthrough role in "Titanic" (1997), DiCaprio continued to deliver memorable performances that resonated with audiences worldwide. His portrayal of Frank Abagnale Jr. in "Catch Me If You Can" (2002) showcased his charm and versatility, while his role as undercover cop Billy Costigan in Martin Scorsese's "The Departed" (2006) demonstrated his ability to delve into complex characters.

DiCaprio's extraordinary talent was recognized in 2015 when he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his visceral performance in "The Revenant," cementing his place as one of the most celebrated actors of the 2000s.

Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks, known for his versatility and everyman charm, delivered a series of outstanding performances throughout the 2000s. His portrayal of a FedEx executive stranded on a deserted island in "Cast Away" (2000) captivated audiences, showcasing his range as an actor. In "Road to Perdition" (2002), Hanks portrayed a conflicted hitman, delivering a nuanced and powerful performance. We also can’t forget one of the most iconic characters ever to come from cinema ‘Forrest Gump’.

Although he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in "Cast Away," Hanks' impact on the cinematic landscape of the 2000s extends far beyond accolades, as he continues to captivate audiences with his exceptional performances.

Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling is one of many talented actors from Canada, and is often labelled as a leading man in romcoms. However, we think his catalogue of work, including some hilarious comedies like ‘The Nice Guys’, is more than enough to earn him recognition for being an outstanding, well-rounded actor. His breakthrough role came in 2004 with the cult favourite, romantic drama "The Notebook," where his portrayal of Noah Calhoun captured the hearts of audiences worldwide. Two years later, he delivered a powerful performance in the indie film "Half Nelson," earning critical acclaim for his role as a struggling inner-city teacher.

Gosling continued to impress with his versatility, showcasing his range in films such as "Blue Valentine" (2010) and "Drive" (2011). While he may not have received major awards during the 2000s, Gosling's impactful performances and undeniable talent established him as a force in the industry, and his influence on popular culture continues to resonate to this day. His latest contribution is sure to go down as iconic, with him playing Ken in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie”.

Daniel Day-Lewis

Daniel Day-Lewis, known and respected for his immersive and transformative performances, is often referred to as the greatest actor period. His portrayal of Bill "The Butcher'' Cutting in Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York" (2002) showcased his extraordinary range and intensity as an actor. However, it was his role as Daniel Plainview in Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood" (2007) that garnered the most widespread critical acclaim. Day-Lewis's mesmerising performance as the ruthless oil tycoon earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor and solidified his reputation as a true master of his craft. With his unmatched dedication and ability to fully immerse himself in his roles, Daniel Day-Lewis became an iconic figure for sure.

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman's remarkable performances, including her portrayal of the tortured ballerina Nina Sayers in Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller "Black Swan" (2010) have solidified her work portfolio as a tour de force, captivating audiences and critics alike. The role not only showcased Portman's exceptional acting skills but also demonstrated her dedication and commitment to her craft, as she trained extensively in ballet to bring authenticity to her performance.

In addition to "Black Swan," Portman's roles in the infamous "V for Vendetta" (2005) and "Closer" (2004) really earned her a well-deserved fantastic reputation as an actress who could effortlessly embody complex and compelling characters. Her exceptional work in "Black Swan" earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, marking a definitive highlight of her career during the 2000s.

Sean Penn

Sean Penn's powerful and emotionally charged role as Jimmy Markum in Clint Eastwood's "Mystic River" (2003) was a masterclass in delivering a haunting portrayal of grief and inner turmoil. Penn's raw and compelling performance resonated deeply with audiences and earned him his first Academy Award for Best Actor.

In 2008, he added another Best Actor Oscar to his accolades for his portrayal of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California, in the biographical drama "Milk." Penn's ability to bring complex characters to life with nuance and depth solidified his status as one of the most respected actors of the 2000s.
