Perspektive Deutsches Kino: Die Ausbildung (The Education) by Dirk Lütter wins FGYO Prize "Dialogue en perspective"

Today, during the award ceremony of the Independent Juries of the 61st Berlinale, the young French-German-Bosnian jury awarded the "Dialogue en perspective" prize. It goes this year to Dirk Lütter's film Die Ausbildung (The Education). The award was initiated in 2004 by the Franco-German Youth Office (FGYO), an official partner of the Berlinale, in association with Perspektive Deutsches Kino.

The young jury that has selected the winner of "Dialogue en perspective" this year consists of one Bosnian, three German and three French film fans between the ages of 23 and 28. Under the leadership of their jury president, filmmaker Romuald Karmakar, the jurors watched the 11 entries in the Berlinale Perspektive Deutsches Kino section from a young German-French-Bosnian perspective, and afterwards passionately discussed which film had impressed them most and deserved the "Dialogue en perspective" prize.

The jury explains having chosen Die Ausbildung (The Education) as follows:

The jury of the Franco-German Youth Office awards its "Dialogue en Perspective" prize unanimously to Die Ausbildung by Dirk Lütter. Set in a town in western Germany, the film is about the last part of a three-year training programme that twenty-year-old Jan is about to complete in a medium-sized company and whether he will be hired for a permanent position afterwards.

Featuring outstanding actors, the director makes use of the visuals, sound, costumes and set design as well as the structure and rhythm to intensify the dramaturgy until it causes uneasiness and anxiety.

The film succeeds in questioning the victim-offender relationship in the modern working world and the pressure to conform that prevails in society. Thus for the jury, Dirk Lütter's artistic point of view also reflects on conformity in German cinema.

With the "Dialogue en perspective" prize, the FGYO would like to promote, on the one hand, the exchange between German and French young people and, on the other hand, the intercultural dialogue on film, especially on young German cinema.

In 2010, Florian Schewe's film Lebendkontrolle (Outside) won the prize. Previous winners of the "Dialogue en perspective" prize included Prinzessinnenbad (Pool of Princesses) by Bettina Blümner (2007), Der Lebensversicherer (Running on Empty) by Bülent Akinci (2006) and Robert Thalheim's film Netto (Net, 2005). They all went on to achieve widespread recognition in Germany. The chances are good that Die Ausbildung will also receive similar attention after winning this award.
