Filming confirmed on 108 Media co-production 'Performing KAORU’s Funeral'

Thursday 14th October, London: 108 Media and PKFP Partners LLC have announced that the shoot for their co-production of tragicomedy ‘Performing KAORU’s Funeral’ will begin in January 2022 with an anticipated 4-week shoot in Japan.

Directed by Noriko Yuasa (‘Coming Back Sunny’ and ‘Girl, Wavering’), the film tells the story of Jun Yokotani, bound by obligations of death to honour his estranged ex-wife Kaoru’s passing before he can begin life anew. Completely incompatible, Yokotani and Kaoru's daughter (also named Kaoru) must change their lives completely as they try to create a new family while performing Kaoru's funeral.

Writer Takato Nishi teams up with Yuasa after previously working together on ‘Coming Back Sunny’ and ‘Girl, Wavering’ together, with Mika Shimoeda (Rising Sun International Festival 2020 - Best Japan Film Award Winner) as producer and Takeo Hisamatsu, CEO of MyWay Movies LLC, co-producing. The film will be completed by Q3 2022.

As well as co-producing the title, 108 Media will also be handling worldwide sales and is currently marketing it worldwide.

Yuasa says of the film “This project focuses on the domestic phenomenon of funerals in Japan is not just simple personal matter, it’s shared with everyone and definitely meaningful. The film depicts the universal theme of humankind to say their final goodbyes and restart is sure to be the key to bringing empathy and excitement to the world and posting people's lives.

Ryo Ebe, Managing Director of 108 Media (North-East Asia) says “We are delighted to confirm production of this brilliant story. Striking at the heart of what it means to become family while acknowledging the past within, "Performing KAORU's Funeral" welcomes the complexity of passions at the heart of our identities.
